About the Book
How to justify the madness that takes hold from Raspado
de Coco to Agua Dulce, when Jura, Carlo Cristiano’s dog, is
rescued by the Coast Guard and ends up in the hands of the boys from
Übertown?
Yes, it was a foreseeable tragedy, given South Florida’s isolated
evolution. Decades of benevolent Yankee neglect and liberal pandering
have fostered a new man—one inclined to double speak, to waving
“commie” flags on cue and to patting himself on the back for “draining
this swamp” and making it look like Madruga. Mucha muela, since
most of these abuelos are fossil evidence of just one thing: a
State of the Union imperiled.
Of course, it’s even worse for Jura’s masters in Madruga. Carlo’s
been attacked by crazed Caleros, and Sophia’s been kidnapped from Sabana
airport. It’s obvious now; they’re in Alex Tenedor’s murderous clutches
and as usual, Madruga’s Führer is conjuring a monstrous scheme and
intending for “Act 2” to play out in South Florida.
This diverting novel of political satire from Cuban-American attorney
Iris Optaciana offers an incisive
commentary on life and death in Communist Madruga, as Carlo
follows the trail of his missing canine companion from the bloody
slaughterhouses of the Caribbean island nation and unto Miami’s misnamed
streets.
